artist: Zorginstelling Lindestede
Together with the landscape and garden architect, Thijs van Hees, the artistic duo Bik van der Pol developed a design for the garden of the elderly care facility, Lindestede. Lindestede is located in Friesland and is made up of a healthcare center and two nursing homes that are primarily aimed at the elderly. The fundamental goal of the art project was to ensure that no distinction would be made between the disciplines of art and landscape architecture and that both would function in synergy to create the design.

The clock
The concept for the design of the garden was based on a clock. Indeed the shape of the block of buildings that make up Lindestede resembles a clock or hour piece rotating around its axis. The clock additionally represents a metaphor for time, change and memory, elements that play an important role in the lives of Lindestede’s elderly residents. Surrounding the building complex is a garden that was divided into different sections. The main purposes of the different components of the design are to stimulate interaction and communication between the residents and to keep alive memories of the world that lies beyond the walls of Lindestede.
Walking trails
Walking trails were laid out along the perimeters of the building complex. These trails aim to stimulate communication and interaction since people can pass each others’ windows, have a chat and wave at each other.
The children’s farm
The children’s farm plays an important role in the garden’s design since it was constructed near the front entrance of the building, thereby acting as a bridge between the town and Lindestede in order to encourage mutual use. It’s also rather inviting and even acts as a topic of conversation. Moreover, by positioning the children’s farm near the building complex, the residents can remain unaware of the fact that they are surrounded by the fences that separate the Lindestede property from the animals outside.
A paddock with horses
Often one or two Friesian horses are let loose in the paddock situated behind Lindestede. This paddock extends to Lindestede’s private gardens which means that horses can often be spotted within the complex. The Friesian horse is the only native thoroughbred in Holland and dates back to the 13th century. The presence of these horses makes up part of the collective memory of the landscape that surrounds Wolvega.
Fields
‘Fields’ were laid out on the right side of the building complex and residents, families, schools and locals can apply for a vegetable garden, herb garden or flower garden. Previously in the Weststellingwerf region, there was a flourishing cattle and agriculture industry. Therefore the gardens not only have a social function by offering activities, but also act as an echo from the past.
Evaluation
An evaluation of the project will take place a year after its completion since the completion should not signify the project’s end of the line. After all, assessing the use of the garden, what it adds or generates and whether the design actually works is essential to the project’s success. Indeed everything that was planted will grow gradually and the intended effects of the design need to be able to ‘take root’ first. The ‘observers’, i.e. the residents, staff members, volunteers, visitors as well as the artists and the architect will record how the garden is used and will collect the experiences of the residents through images and text. In consultation with Thijs van Hees, this information will be incorporated into a publication that will be printed approximately one to two years after the completion of the garden. This publication will also include stories and quotes of other individuals who have specific knowledge, experiences or visions related to the project and were invited to contribute.
