Piet Dirkx who is a native of Eindhoven, once referred to himself as a polychromist. ‘In response to the monochrome art of painting’, he explained. When one views his oeuvre it becomes obvious that Dirkx has remained true to his conviction. His work is replete with color. This is also the case with the frieze that he made for De Batting in Harlingen.

In the open space of the central lobby, the artist installed a frieze composed of twelve tableaus built up of painted plywood and hardwood shapes. The flower or palette-shapes are characteristic of Dirkx’ work as are the abstract shapes. Occasionally the shapes reappear elsewhere or are deliberately counterposed. Since the open space is divided into four compartments, the entire tableau cannot be taken in at a single glance. Instead it slowly unfolds itself to the visitor or patient. This work of art subtly alludes to the Frisian landscape.
