Action Research is a programme made up of temporary projects and quickly-made art works created by artists for the already inhabited sites. The works focus on contemporary Leidsche Rijn as a community under construction.
A variety of artists, domestic as well as international, were invited to participate in Action Research. On the initiative of SKOR, Dennis Adams (US) and the Danish artists collective, N55, created works. Since 2004 a variety of artists have taken up residence in Leidsche Rijn to develop projects. Action Research: Dennis Adams STADIUM
For Leidsche Rijn’s neighborhoods, Parkwijk and Langerak, Dennis Adams created a work titled Stadium. Adams allowed countless bright orange bucket seats to disperse and ‘descend’ upon both neighborhoods. These seats are the same type of seats that are used in Utrecht’s football stadium, Galgewaard. With the seats, Adams alludes to the stadium’s so-called ‘Bunnikzijders’, a close community of local football supporters. Do the 'Leidsche Rijners' feel a sense of community yet or would they rather seek entertainment in the old city? Through the bucket seats - which have also been placed in downtown Utrecht - Adams attempts to forge a relationship between the old and the new Utrecht.
Action Research: N55 LAND
What is the purpose of visual art on a Vinex location? As an artistic intervention, N55 made a substantive statement. Near the underpass that connects the Hof ter Weydeweg with the Utrechtseweg N55 land-marked a piece of Leidsche Rijn’s ‘no man’s land’ with a perfect, round hill.
The hill marks a piece of land that is freely accessible and to which everyone has equal property rights. It is an area where the rules and structures of society do not apply and where everyone could, theoretically speaking, feel completely free. In the Netherlands as well as around the rest of the world, N55 has marked pieces of land in order to make heartfelt statements against the ownership and regulation of land.
