When speaking of the art of Krijn de Koning, there are two salient features that immediately spring to mind: a ‘Krijn de Koning’ is instantly recognizable by the stark imagery of rectangular shapes and colored surfaces. Most often these geometric constructions interact – to a greater or lesser degree - with their immediate surroundings. In Leiden’s Diaconessenhuis (nursing home), De Koning once again made his work ‘respond’ to the building in form as well as content. Based on the shape of a tree that is continually branching off, he spread his sculpture across no less than four floors of the Diaconessenhuis. This geometric structure seems to ignore the ceilings and continues up each floor, expanding from a compact shape (the trunk) on the first floor to a more open and finally playful and finely-woven network (the crest) on the fourth floor.
