The collection of ceramic objects in the Grey Matter installation, made in 2001 for the Rijckehove Nursing Home in Capelle aan de Ijssel, makes one think of a display of archaeological finds. The Russian artist Alexander Brodsky made the objects during a residency in the European Ceramic Work Centre in Den Bosch. They are placed in the entrance foyer of the nursing home, distributed over three display cases.
Brodsky’s objects are made of unbaked clay and vary in size and scale. Items of clothing, toys, books, radios and pets are rendered according to memory rather than to reality. The installation has a dreamlike atmosphere, alluding to the passing of time and the power of human memory.
