Diverse Market, a project by artist Ines den Rooijen, took place on 20 March 2004 as part of the Babel Festival in Amsterdam’s Old South district (the Pijp). As a temporary event focussing on the cohesiveness of today’s society, Den Rooijen’s project involved working with non-profit associations and foundations dedicated to common aims.
The associations presented themselves and their activities to the public at various locations in the vicinity of the Ostade Theatre. Among the ninety or so associations taking part were choirs, angling clubs, brass bands, a shuffleboard club, Quakers, Esperanto speakers and members of the Society for Human Development. The day climaxed with the handing out of hundreds of free jerrycans as ‘public objects’ so as to emphasise the participation of the public in the work of art. At the end of the day the public could be seen carrying these cans and fanning out across the district. More information about the project can be found at www.diversmarkt.nl
