SKOR
SKOR develops and realises art projects in public space. The projects can be grandiose and confusing, stimulating or shocking, consoling and intimate. From a drawing on the beach that is erased by the tide, to a trio of pavilions for a mental health institution where patients and visitors can meet each other, to a long-term art programme at a VINEX urban expansion site that explores the relationships between art, the landscape and urban life. The projects organised by SKOR react to socio-political changes in society and new developments in contemporary art, urban design and landscape architecture. SKOR mediates between artists, commissioners and the general public. Through addressing topical themes not only in the works of art but also in its public programme, SKOR contributes to the debate about the meaning and use of public space.
SKOR was founded in 1999 when the Bureau for Visual Art Assignments (Praktijkbureau Beeldende Kunstopdrachten) became independent from the Mondriaan Foundation. SKOR is subsidized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. It is located in the cultural heart of Amsterdam and is housed in a former sewage purification building.
VISION
Art in public space exists in a domain full of social, political and cultural meanings, tensions and conflicts. SKOR relates to the politics of the public domain and invites artists to take a position in it. Each art project can offer a new, confrontational or expanded perspective on social issues and the spatial organization of the public sphere. In realising art projects and in its wide-ranging public programme SKOR enters into alliances with partners such as cultural centres, public and private organisations like municipalities, provincial and central governments, healthcare and educational institutions, project developers or architectural offices, in order to create a common platform for art in the public domain. Interaction with the public is an essential feature of art in public space. SKOR strives to increase this interaction by actively involving the public in its activities and projects and by creating openness and transparency around its decisions regarding content and artistic value.
