Beyond-Leidsche Rijn

A strategical art project was developed for Leidsche Rijn, a Vinex site (a site designated by the government for urban development) that is located near Utrecht and is still under construction. The project, titled Beyond-Leidsche Rijn, was developed by a study group under the supervision of Peter Kuenzli. It focuses on the relationship between the urban development plan, the landscape, the construction schedule and visual art. The project was commissioned by the City of Utrecht’s Department of Cultural Affairs and was developed in collaboration with SKOR. This research project is important to SKOR since it sheds new light on how one should manage art projects on Vinex locations.

In 2003 Beyond started out with permanent works of art and temporary projects including: Action Research, Parasites, Looping, Regiekunstenaars (Directing Artists), Kunstenaarshuizen (Artist’s Houses) and Witte Vlekken (White Marks).
Action Research is a programme made up of temporary projects and quickly-made artistic interventions created by artists in the already inhabited sites.
Parasites is a collective term for mobile architecture and experimental forms of light urban development.
Looping, the public relations department of Beyond, aims to involve the public in Beyond’s activities and to stimulate a debate on its art programme.
Directing Artists: artists who contribute their ideas with regard to the design of a number of large-scale infrastructural projects.
Artist’s Houses: a few artists were invited to respond to the urbanization of Leidsche Rijn.
The White Marks are the spaces that remain unoccupied and defunct during the construction period and are used for temporary art projects.
